Are books effective in teaching Martial Arts?

Gordon Showes: absolutely not. the reader may be able to see the move but it cannot be executed properly without the eyes of a teacher.

Mercedez Trabue: Martial arts books are a good supplement to normal training but they aren't going to get you anywhere unless you are going to a dojo. You can learn new techniques from books to improve your game but not an entire martial art.

Derrick Kloke: Send me just $999.99 and I will send you your first written manuscript that will teach you how to knock out 10 men with only one punch, dodge bullets so fast that the bullet won't see you move and kiai so hard you will knock over brick walls from 40 feet away. Then once a month for only another $999.99 I will send you the next manuscript that will teach you more amazing martial feats! Seriously though. No there is not a book that will do what you ask. The books out there are meant to be supplementary to the professional training you receive from a qualified instructor. Ther! e are some methods of distance training that involve video exchanges and some are better than others, however, the only reason to use these is if you are unable to attend and train in person....Show more

Hong Hunkin: No you need a martial arts teacher to teach you how to do them properly

Mitzie Clough: No...books are used for reference and not for learning how to do martial arts. I have an extensive library of martial art books, magazines and periodicals. I love the information and it has helped to make me a better martial artist but I learned the old fashioned way by starting in a dojo with a sensei in 1978 and seeking out the best masters to learn from. If I had read some of the books I have back then, they would have definitely screwed up my training because I did not have the knowledge to understand them...now, after 30 years of everyday non-stop training I understand them better and they help me to learn about other arts. If you want to learn find a qualifi! ed instructor. ...Show more

Lyman Gauld: Well absolutely! NO is the wrong answer... yes they can be, because you don't just execute a move out of thin air do you? No you learn what they are, how they are done, and THEN you physically try it out. I however never trust books in MMA, like mentioned before, you can see yourself doing it, but when you go to try it on an opponent... you usually fail. Best way is always with a class or one on one with an instructor.

Herma Ellebrecht: Can cows milk themselves? They need someone there to do it and make sure its done right. Same as you and me ;)

Queenie Ruthers: Noooooooooooooooooooooooo.

Rachell Meese: no you need an instructorperfectible one that knows what there doing

Serena Doak: IN MY OWN OPINION, no it is not, most of the books I look into martial arts are not complete. I mean, they hide the real things in order for the person to enrol in the course, like Karate or Aikido. Books are just guides or manual for us to know the basic moves or style of the martia! l arts but not through books we can learn it or be master of it. Physical learning is the best one, having small bruises while sparring or being kick in the face or stomach and knowing how it feel to be hit is one of the best experience on learning martial arts. If you haven't been hit either in the face or any part of the body how can you say to yourself that you learn the skill?...Show more
