why did burbage build the globe theatre outside the city limits?

Donny Bankson: it seems as if originally they owned the actual theatre and leased the land. when they tried to renew the lease, people tried to block them and were planning on tearing the building down and put the timber to "to better use". somehow they found a clause in the lease that stipulated they could dismantle the building themselves. so while the leaseholder was out of town, they dismantled the theatre and moved it across the river. sneaky....

Clark Lachowski: The Common Council of London started licensing theatrical pieces performed in inn yards within the city limits and to escape the restriction James Burbage built his own theater on land he leased outside the city limits.Plays were banned from London City Limits. Many Londoners were strict Protestants - Puritans in fact, who abhorred the theatres and many of the people they attracted. Objections to the theaters escalated from the Church and the City of London Officials. Respectable London citizens added! even more objections about the rise in crime and the bawdy nature of some of the plays, fighting, drinking not to mention the risk of so many people and the spread of the Bubonic Plague! Finally, in 1596 London's authorities were unwilling to ignore the growing complaints any longer and the public presentation of plays and all theaters within the City limits of London were banned....Show more
