Can I convert Optical Out --> XLR? Where can buy this adapter?

Floy Fague: This Site Might Help You.RE:Can I convert Optical Out --> XLR? Where can buy this adapter?Im thinking of using the Optical out on my laptop to connect to my powered Mackie speakers. The speakers have a XLR connection. Do they sell a Optical-->XLR?or should I use 1/8mini-->XLR ? where can i buy it? Thanks!...Show more

Marvel Mcaulay: your optical out puts out a digital signal, not an analogue one...which i THINK is what the mackies need (they haven't got an on-board dac have they?). you can change an optical to an electrical signal...most commonly optical-spdif but you'd still need to convert that, in a dac, from digital to analogue.your mini-jack out put will provide the analogue signal you want...and you can easily get a cable like this - http://www.soundgear.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_pag...but i'd use the shortest run of cable you can find...and go for ofc wire when you're shopping - it really makes a difference to the soundBUT the output on your lapt! op is likely to be only so-so 'cos of the relatively lo quality soundcard you can cram into them...still the mackies will make the best of it i think...if you don't like the sound quality then you can get an external soundcard...russandrews.com does one for silly money but it does sound good...otherwise search it on ebay - you'll see there's ALOT of choice....Show more

Joey Mekeel: You will need to buy an a/d - d/a converter (analog to digital, digital to analog). You can get them at most music stores. Check out sweetwater.com. They have many options for these. Going digital out will give you the best sound quality. It's a little late since you already have them, but lots of great monitors are made with digital/optical ins. My Roland DS90s are run with digital coaxle and they sound great.
