The 'greenhouse effect' becomes more robust every year as we add more CO2 to the atmosphere and every years there are more demands made on water supplies world wide. People have settled where there is water, and climate change could very well destroy that balance between people and the availability of water...or it could flood them out. As an example here in western Arizona every year we have more people. This requires burning more fossil fuel to keep the air conditioning on. Every ton of burning anything adds CO2 to our paper thin atmosp! here. Without air conditioning there would be no living here six months out of the year. More people mean more water use and the water available isn't enough now, much less for a growing population. ignoring the obvious doesn't seem like a smart thing to do. Moving on to 21st century technology to keep the lights on and the wheels on the road makes more sense. What they're talking about here is potentially a very significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, just how much will be determined more by economic growth than anything else. In real terms it will probably result in a reduction in the order of 25% as measured against the emissions that would have occured. For a country such as China, this is going to be very difficul! t to achieve in such a short space of time. Or at least it is ! if they don't want to adversely affect their expanding economy. One factor which we should be taking into account but few are: China's economy and emissions are growing because the rest of the world is demanding cheaper goods. China is able to meet this demand by increasing manufacturing output and consequently increasing greenhouse gas emissions. The flip-side to this is that there is a reduction in GHG emissions in other countries as their manufacturing output declines. The real test will be to see of China can compete on an environmental basis with other countries. In this respect the outlook is more promising. I don't have accurate figures but let's assume that the Chinese manufacture a TV and in so doing crerate 50kg of GHG, if that same TV were to have been made elsewhere but at an environmental cost of 60kg of GHG then on a global scale emissions will have fallen. Many sceptics are very quick to point the finger of blame at the Chinese but all thet're doing is creati! ng the same GHG's that we'd be doing were we to manufacture the goods. It's the West's demand for these goods that is fuelling the problems in China. Also, let's take a moment to look at how other countries have done. The need to address GHG emissions was pretty much established as fact back in the 70's but it took a further 10 to 20 years before real action was proposed and targets implemented. So far these targets have failed to be realised, many countries set them but very few have met them. To date there has been a lot of talk but little action, I can't really see that China will be any different. And, we often overlook the advances that the Chinese are making with their environmental programmes. An increasing proportion of their energy demands are being met by renewables and thay have some of the largest and most far-reaching environmental projects of any country....Show more

The more freshwater dumped into the ocean from Greenland, and surrounding glaciers, makes the salinity of the water very thing which slows down this engine almost completely. When the currents stops or slows down look out Europe, Canada, Northern U.S., and pretty much anything from about the latitude of the Ohio river cause is ice age time. These people view the subject as political. They only ask 'questions' for the pur! pose of advocacy and spreading their opinion, so they assume everyone else does the same. It's projection. And honestly, the majority of 'questions' on this site are not sincere questions. Most people are either trying to spread their opinion or looking for people to tell them what they want to hear.It's unfortunate because it negates any positive effect this site could have. The few sincere questions tend to get pushed off the front page by non-questions quite quickly, and get fewer answers than they should. You have to weed through the misinformation to find the factually accurate answers, and through the garbage questions to find the ones worth answering.It shouldn't be like that. Unfortunately YA doesn't do any moderation of the site, other than to enforce their very generic rules (inconsistently at that). So there's really no motivation for people not to answer questions that they don't know the answer to. Thus the site has degenerated more into political bicke! ring than scientific Q&A.
