Are Ham radios and scanners the same thing?

Rickey Vrieze: no a Han radio is much more it allows 2 way communication with any one in the world through its medium whereas a scanner picks up calls on preselected frequencies and is one way only

James Langmyer: No, they're different. Scanners only receive signals so that you can listen to radio traffic. Both ham radios and CBs transmit as well as receive signals so you can carry on a conversation over them.

Armanda Hertel: No, not the same. Scanners are radio receicers, for listening only. Ham Radio lets you communicate to other licensed Hams locally or worldwide.Thank you for your interest in Ham Radio. It requires you to pass an exam to transmit on the FCC regulated radio bands. CB is not regulated anymore and is not part of Ham Radio.Ham Radio is fun and useful. You can use Ham Radio to talk to other licensed friends, make new ones, or assist with emergency and disaster communications.Finding a radio club near you is one way! to get started.
